Why pasture board, you may ask? When properly set up, pasture boarding is actually better and safer for your horse than stall boarding. Pastured horses develop fewer vices like cribbing, weaving and wood chewing, since they’re not bored by their confinement. Pasturing is also better for your horses hoof health, and for their respiratory systems. A pastured horse is also generally more physically fit, since he has more ability to exercise. As a rule, healthy adult horses are better off being pastured. Young foals, broodmares, and senior horses may be better off being stalled due to their extra nutritional requirements, though this is not always the case. The key to successful pasture boarding is to group horses with like needs together. Unfortunately, most farms pasture boarding simply turn your horse out with the rest of the herd in feed lots which are overgrazed, and with no grain schedule. Only the more aggressive horses thrive in such an environment, the rest have difficulty even getting to the roundbale feeder.
By contrast, at Fairhaven we separate horses at feeding time to ensure they all get their feed and no one elses, and we have multiple pastures available to be able to group horses to everyones benefit. Horse are grained twice daily in winter, once daily in summer months, when grass is the primary source of their diet (as it should be!). We do offer stall board as well, since some horses benefit by being stalled at night. A foaling stall is available as well.
Our rates are very competitive, starting at just $150/ month for pasture board. Multiple horse discounts are available as well.
